How to sell signed paperbacks direct from your own website
Stock, postage, packaging and card fees for a signed 300-page paperback, with UK and US worked examples, the dispatch routine and the EU safety rule.
To sell signed paperbacks from your own site, you buy author copies at print cost, sign them, list them with postage built into the price, and post each order yourself. For a 300-page paperback sold in the UK, the copy, mailer, Royal Mail postage and card fee come to roughly £8.80, so £14.99 including postage leaves you about £6 a book. That is more than KDP pays on a £12.99 paperback sold on Amazon, and the reader gets a signature.
The figures below were checked on 1 November 2026. Print, postage and card fees change, so rerun the sums with your own book and current prices before you set yours.
Where the stock comes from
The simplest source is KDP itself. KDP's help page on proof and author copy costs says author copies are charged at the printing cost for your marketplace with no further discount, plus shipping, which is shown at checkout and is not Prime-eligible. You can order up to 999 copies at a time. Using KDP's printing cost formula, a 300-page black and white paperback on a regular trim costs $4.60 from Amazon.com and £3.85 from Amazon.co.uk.
A UK printer such as Bookvault is the other route. Its quote tool gave us £4.16 a copy for a 300-page paperback at 132 × 197mm on 70gsm cream paper with a matt cover, ordering 1 to 99 copies. That falls to £4.04 from 100 copies, £3.95 from 250 and £3.74 from 500. The same book printed in the US was quoted at $5.47. Bookvault's pricing page adds a title set-up fee of £19.95 on its free plan, and you pay its delivery charge on top of the print cost.
KDP is cheaper per copy in both countries. Bookvault lets you choose paper, finish and special editions such as sprayed edges, which matter more on a book people are buying as an object.
Postage
In the UK, Royal Mail's online prices from 7 April 2026 are the ones to use, because they are lower than the Post Office counter. A small parcel up to 2kg costs £3.65 with Tracked 48, £4.65 with Tracked 24, £3.95 with Second Class and £5.15 with First Class. Tracked 48 is the cheapest of those and includes compensation up to £75. A slim book that stays within Royal Mail's large letter size of 353 × 250 × 25mm and 750g costs £2.85 with Tracked 48.
In the US, USPS Notice 123 lists Media Mail retail prices of $4.39 up to 1 lb and $5.13 up to 2 lb. Media Mail is meant for books and similar media, so a signed novel qualifies. Weigh a packed copy on a kitchen scale before you fix your shipping charge, because going over a pound costs another $0.74.
Packaging
A cardboard book wrap mailer protects the corners better than a padded envelope. Mailcoms, for example, lists a 216 × 151 × 51mm book wrap at £5.99 including VAT for a pack of ten, which is about 60p a book and falls within Royal Mail's small parcel size. Buy a larger pack once you know your trim size fits.
Worked example: the price that leaves a margin
Here is a UK order for one signed 300-page paperback printed by Bookvault and posted by Tracked 48:
| Cost | Amount |
|---|---|
| Printed copy, 1 to 99 run | £4.16 |
| Book wrap mailer | £0.60 |
| Royal Mail Tracked 48 small parcel, online | £3.65 |
| Card fee at £14.99 (Stripe, standard UK card, 1.5% + 20p) | £0.42 |
| Total | £8.83 |
At £14.99 including UK postage, that leaves £6.16 a copy before the delivery charge on your stock order, which you spread across the batch. Using a KDP author copy at £3.85 instead lifts it to £6.47, before KDP's shipping charge. Stripe's UK pricing charges more for premium and international cards, so overseas orders cost a little more to take.
For comparison, KDP's paperback royalty on the same book is £3.94 at £12.99 on Amazon.co.uk, or £2.14 at £9.99. Our article on KDP royalties shows that arithmetic.
In the US, a KDP author copy at $4.60 plus Media Mail at $4.39 comes to $8.99 before the mailer, the card fee and KDP's shipping. At $19.99 including postage, that leaves $11.00 to cover those and your margin.
The order and dispatch routine
- Order a batch of copies, sign them as they arrive and store them flat and dry.
- List the signed edition on your site with postage included in the price, and say which countries you ship to and how long dispatch takes.
- When an order comes in, check the name for any dedication the reader asked for, then sign and pack it.
- Buy the postage online through the Royal Mail app or USPS, print the label and drop the parcel off.
- Send the reader the tracking number and mark the order as dispatched.
- Reorder when your stock gets down to a few weeks of sales, because print and delivery take time.
The Indie Author Toolchest takes physical orders on your author page with you as the seller, so the order lands with you and the routine above is the same.
The EU product safety rule
If you post copies to readers in the EU, the General Product Safety Regulation applies, and when you send the book yourself you are the one placing it on the market. That means a named EU responsible person, with traceability details on the book or in the parcel. Our guide to GPSR for indie authors sets out what to include. Until you have that in place, limit your shipping options to the UK and the US.
For setting the list price itself, our guide on how to price your book covers the print edition as well as the ebook.
Questions, answered
How much do KDP author copies cost?
KDP charges the printing cost for your marketplace, with no further discount, plus shipping and any tax shown at checkout. For a 300-page black and white paperback on a regular trim that is $4.60 a copy from Amazon.com or £3.85 from Amazon.co.uk, using KDP's published printing cost formula.
What is the cheapest way to post a paperback in the UK?
If the packed book is no thicker than 25mm and weighs 750g or less, it can go as a large letter, which costs £2.85 with Tracked 48 bought online. Most novels in a protective mailer are small parcels, which cost £3.65 with Tracked 48 online or £3.95 with Second Class online, at Royal Mail prices from 7 April 2026.
Can I send books by USPS Media Mail?
Yes. Books are one of the main things Media Mail is for. USPS Notice 123 lists the retail price at $4.39 for up to 1 lb and $5.13 for up to 2 lb, so weigh the packed book before you set your shipping charge.
How much should I charge for a signed paperback?
Add up the copy, the mailer, the postage and the card fee, then decide the margin you want on top. In our UK example the costs come to about £8.83, so a price of £14.99 including UK postage leaves about £6.16 a copy before the cost of getting your stock delivered.
Do I need an EU responsible person to post books to EU readers?
Under the EU General Product Safety Regulation, a book sold to a consumer in the EU needs a named business in the EU responsible for it. When you post the copy yourself, that duty sits with you, so either appoint someone or restrict your shipping to the UK and the US until you have.
