KDP preorder or straight to release? What a Kindle preorder actually does

Lessons1 November 20265 min read

What a KDP ebook preorder does to rank, royalties and your deadline, the penalty for missing it, why paperbacks cannot be preordered, and a plain rule for deciding.

A KDP preorder is worth having when you already have readers to tell about it and the book is finished. If you have no reader list yet and the manuscript is still with the editor, publish straight to release. The rules below come from KDP Help as it reads on 1 November 2026.

Everything below is for Kindle ebooks. Paperbacks and hardcovers work differently and have their own section.

What a KDP preorder does

When you tick the preorder option in the ebook details, you choose a release date and Amazon puts a buy button on the book's page from the day KDP approves it. Readers who order are charged when the order is processed, which KDP Help says may be the day before your release date depending on the marketplace time zone. You see the orders in the Pre-Orders Report, but the sales do not appear in your other reports until the book is delivered, and KDP says you receive credit for the final sales once readers start downloading their copies.

The release date can be up to 18 months ahead for preorders created on or after 2 September 2026. Preorders created before that date were limited to 12 months, and an older KDP release options page still says one year, so you will see both figures. The preorder help page carries the September 2026 change, so treat that as the current rule.

You do not need the final manuscript to open the preorder. You do need it uploaded and submitted at least 72 hours before the release date, after which the file and the book details are locked.

How preorders count towards rank

KDP Help says that preorders contribute towards sales rank and Kindle Store merchandising before your release. A preorder counts as a sale on the day it is placed, so forty readers who order across three months give you a small lift forty times. The same forty readers buying on release day give you one spike that could carry the book onto a category bestseller list for a day or two.

There is no official answer on which is better, because it depends on what you want the rank for. A visible spike on release day gives you a screenshot for your newsletter and a bestseller flag for the week. A steady trickle keeps the book from sitting at zero sales for months, which matters less than many authors think, since a new book with no sales has no rank to lose.

The penalty for missing the date

If you miss the 72-hour deadline, or you cancel the preorder, or you postpone it more times than KDP allows, the preorder is cancelled and every reader who ordered gets an email telling them so. Those readers trusted you with an order and now have nothing, which costs you more than the penalty does.

KDP Help softened its own penalty in September 2026. Your first missed deadline or cancellation is now a one-time account-level courtesy and your preorder privileges stay intact. A second one removes preorder privileges for six months across your whole catalogue, and they come back automatically. If your privileges were removed before 2 September 2026, your original one-year penalty still runs. The older release options page still describes a one-year ban for a single miss, so again, follow the preorder page.

Paperbacks cannot be preordered

KDP Help is plain about it: preorders are for ebooks only, not paperbacks or hardcovers. Print books get a different option called Schedule a Release. You pick a date between 5 and 90 days ahead and the book goes on sale that day. The Amazon detail page is not shown before the release date, you cannot change the file or the details from five days before, and there is no penalty if you have to cancel. It lines the paperback up with the ebook, but nobody can order it early. If you want print preorders, Barnes & Noble Press and IngramSpark offer them, and our retailer links article covers getting those listings.

Pricing during a preorder

You can change the price while the preorder runs. KDP Help says that if you lower it, customers who already ordered are charged the lower price. On Amazon.de, German fixed-price law means a price increase cancels all prior orders, and those customers are told they can order again. Decide the launch price before you open the preorder, and if you want a cheap launch, set the cheap price from the start rather than dropping it later. How should I price my book works through the royalty bands.

When a preorder helps

  • You have a reader list, even a small one, and a date gives you something to send. A preorder link turns "coming soon" into an order.
  • It is book two or later in a series. Readers finishing book one can order the next one from the back matter while they still want it.
  • You are publishing wide. Kobo, Apple Books and Google Play all take preorders, and one shared date keeps every store in step.
  • You are organising a launch with other authors, such as the swaps and group promos in our newsletter swaps article, and you need a live link weeks ahead.
  • The book is finished. The deadline is then a formality rather than a risk.

When a preorder hurts

  • You have no list and no following. A preorder page with no traffic takes nothing from anyone, and it spends your early sales before release day, when a spike would have been more use.
  • The manuscript is not back from the editor. The 72-hour deadline does not move for a late edit, and a cancelled preorder costs you the readers who ordered.
  • You want the Amazon page to look busy on day one. Preorder sales are spread out, so the launch-day rank is lower than if the same readers bought on the day.
  • You are not sure of the final price, especially on Amazon.de.

The decision rule

Ask three questions. Is the manuscript finished and formatted now? Do you have at least a reader list or a series audience to tell? Are you publishing on more than one store? Two yeses out of three, set the preorder, and keep it short, four to eight weeks, so the sales stay close to launch. One yes or none, publish straight to release and spend the saved weeks building the list instead.

If you do set one, send the preorder link to your readers the day it goes live, then again a week before release. The Indie Author Toolchest sends those emails from your reader list and gives the book its own page with the Amazon link alongside a direct buy button, so the preorder and the direct sale sit together.

Questions, answered

How long can a KDP preorder run?

As of November 2026, KDP Help says you can set a release date up to 18 months ahead for preorders created on or after 2 September 2026, and up to 12 months ahead for preorders created before that date. The final manuscript has to be uploaded and submitted at least 72 hours before the release date, or the preorder is cancelled.

Do preorders count towards Amazon sales rank?

Yes. KDP Help says preorders contribute towards sales rank and Kindle Store merchandising before the release. Each preorder counts when it is placed, so a long preorder spreads your sales over the months rather than stacking them on release day. The royalty is credited after the book is released and delivered.

What happens if I miss the KDP preorder deadline?

The preorder is cancelled and customers who ordered are told and have their orders cancelled. KDP Help now treats the first missed deadline or cancellation as a one-time courtesy with no loss of privileges. A second one removes your ability to set up preorders for six months across your whole catalogue. If your privileges were removed before 2 September 2026, the old one-year penalty still applies.

Can I set up a paperback preorder on KDP?

No. KDP Help says preorders are for ebooks only, not paperbacks or hardcovers. Print books get a separate option called Schedule a Release, which lets you pick a date 5 to 90 days ahead. The book goes on sale on that date, but its Amazon page is not visible beforehand, so readers cannot order it early.

Can I change the price during a preorder?

Yes, with care. KDP Help says that if you lower the price, customers who already preordered are charged the lower price. On Amazon.de a price increase cancels all existing preorders because of German fixed-price law, and customers are told they can order again. Set the launch price you mean to charge before you open the preorder.
