What changed for indie authors in October 2026: Kindle+, Spotify, Smashwords, KDP
October 2026's changes for self-published authors, each with a date, a source and one thing to do: Kindle+ audiobooks, Spotify's 180 markets, Smashwords pre-orders.
October 2026 was an Amazon month. The company renamed Kindle Unlimited, put audiobooks into the subscription, added a second weekly limit on new titles and posted the September fund. Away from Amazon, Spotify started a large expansion of its audiobook markets and Draft2Digital gave the Smashwords Store pre-orders. Each change below has the date, the source and what to do about it. We checked every source on 1 November 2026.
21 October: Kindle Unlimited becomes Kindle+, with audiobooks included
Amazon's announcement on the KDP Community forum covers two changes. The subscription is now called Kindle+ in every marketplace, and for US customers it now includes audiobooks: audiobooks with virtual voice are added automatically when the ebook is in KDP Select, and ACX audiobooks can be enrolled in Select from the KDP Bookshelf if they are exclusive to Audible, have Whispersync enabled and were produced on the Pay for Production model. Royalty Share titles are not eligible yet. Listening is paid by page from the KDP Select Global Fund, with Amazon saying it will add money to the fund to cover the new activity. A page pays once, whether read or listened to, and Immersive Reading pays at the higher rate if the two ever differ. Engadget reported the subscriber price unchanged at about $12 a month, with the 20-title borrowing limit as before.
On 31 October Amazon added a reporting FAQ after authors in the virtual voice beta saw their KENP totals drop. Audible Plus listening used to be counted in the KENP report and has been moved out, including for past months. Those royalties now sit in the Audible column of the Prior Months' Royalties report.
What to do: if you have a virtual voice audiobook, filter your KENP report by format and note pages listened from 21 October. If you have a qualifying ACX title, decide whether Kindle+ reach is worth adding it to Select. Watch the October fund in mid-November, the first with listening in it.
15 October: the September fund is $65.9 million
Amazon announced a September KDP Select Global Fund of $65.9 million, an All Stars bonus of $3.4 million and total author earnings of $69.3 million. Written Word Media's tracker puts the US per-page rate at about $0.0054, the best of the year so far. The full six-month table and the arithmetic for a 300-page novel are in our rate update.
What to do: compare your own September pages read with your royalty figure to get your effective rate, and keep it as the benchmark for October.
5 October: KDP adds a weekly submission limit
Amazon updated its title limits announcement on 5 October. On top of the two-titles-per-format-per-week creation limit that started on 21 September, you can now submit up to two new titles per format each week for publication. The first submission of a title counts, including a title saved as a draft; edits to titles already submitted do not. The weekly reset is Sunday at 12:00 AM UTC. ALLi put the previous limit at ten.
What to do: if you have a boxed set, a new edition and a new release due in the same fortnight, map the formats across weeks now. Our KDP changes in 2026 roundup has the whole year's list.
7 October: Spotify starts taking audiobooks to 180 markets
Publishing Perspectives reported on 7 October that Spotify is extending audiobooks from 22 markets to more than 180 by the end of 2026, starting with Mexico and Colombia that day, Brazil on 15 October, and Europe, the rest of the Americas, the Middle East, Africa and Asia by the end of November. Spotify's deals are non-exclusive. This follows the 9 September launch of audiobook creation tools inside Spotify for Authors, in beta for US self-published authors: the first five English-language audiobooks are free, they are narrated by ElevenLabs voices, they are labelled for listeners as digital narration, and you can distribute them anywhere else as well.
What to do: if your audiobook is with a distributor, check it is opted in to Spotify so the new markets pick it up. If you have no audiobook and a US Spotify for Authors account, the free tool is a low-cost way to test whether your book has an audio audience before paying a narrator.
29 September, reported 10 October: Smashwords Store takes pre-orders
Draft2Digital's press release says the Smashwords Store now accepts ebook pre-orders for the first time. You can list up to 12 months ahead without a finished manuscript or cover, provided both are uploaded at least 10 business days before release. While the book is on pre-order you can run one or more Presales, public or by private link, where readers buy and read before release and you can offer a discount in exchange for an email address. D2D says fewer than 20% of its 300,000-plus authors use pre-orders anywhere. ALLi covered it on 10 October.
What to do: if your next release already has a pre-order on Amazon and the wide stores, add Smashwords and run a private Presale to your mailing list, which is the one place you can collect an address at the point of sale.
Autumn: Ingram's Covered opens to booksellers
Ingram's catalogue and digital review copy site, Covered, lists its first phase for autumn 2026, with booksellers and librarians reading review copies and posting reviews, and ordering and catalogue tools to follow in early 2027. The California Independent Booksellers Alliance ran an introduction for its members on 21 October. The site says publishers can share titles with buyers; it does not say whether IngramSpark accounts will be able to list, and we could not confirm that.
What to do: nothing yet. If you use IngramSpark for trade distribution, watch its blog for a Covered announcement before planning a bookshop campaign around it.
Where we found nothing new
- Kobo Writing Life made no October announcement on terms, royalties or features. The widely repeated figure that Kobo rejected 45% of submissions in 2025 comes from chief executive Michael Tamblyn's remarks in April, reported by The Next Web in June.
- Apple Books for Authors and Google Play Books made no author-facing changes we could find.
- BookFunnel ran a Go Direct blog series on pre-selling, special sales and subscriptions in October, but has made no price or feature change since its February 2026 plan update.
- IngramSpark announced no new fee or policy change in October.
The thread running through this month is that the two biggest changes, Kindle+ and Spotify's expansion, both reward authors who already have an audiobook and both pay from pools the author does not control. Direct sales are the counterweight. The Indie Author Toolchest runs the author page, direct ebook and paperback sales, reader list and review copies on one subscription, which keeps a channel open that no October announcement can reprice. If you are weighing where each book should sit, KDP Select or going wide, book by book is the place to start.
Questions, answered
What is Kindle+ and does it change my KDP Select royalties?
Kindle+ is the new name for Kindle Unlimited, announced by Amazon on 21 October 2026. The change for authors is that audiobooks are now in the subscription for US customers and are paid by page from the same KDP Select Global Fund. Amazon says it is adding money to the fund to cover listening. Ebook reading is paid as before, and the first fund that includes listening is October's, announced in mid-November.
Can I publish an audiobook on Spotify without a distributor?
Yes, in the US. Since 9 September 2026, US self-published authors can create an AI-narrated audiobook inside Spotify for Authors, free for the first five English-language titles, labelled as digital narration and with no exclusivity. From 7 October Spotify began extending audiobooks from 22 markets to more than 180 by the end of 2026.
How do Smashwords pre-orders work?
Draft2Digital announced on 29 September 2026 that the Smashwords Store takes ebook pre-orders for the first time. You can list up to 12 months ahead without a finished manuscript or cover, as long as both are uploaded at least 10 business days before release. While a book is on pre-order you can also run a Presale, where readers buy and read early, optionally at a discount in exchange for an email address.
What is the new KDP submission limit from 5 October 2026?
In addition to the two-titles-per-format-per-week creation limit that started on 21 September, Amazon added a submission limit on 5 October: you can submit up to two new titles per format each week for publication. It counts the first time you submit a title, including one saved as a draft. Edits to titles already submitted do not count. Both limits reset on Sunday at midnight UTC.
Did Kobo, Apple Books or Google Play change anything in October 2026?
We found no October announcement from Kobo Writing Life, Apple Books for Authors or the Google Play Books Partner Centre that changes terms, royalties or features for self-published authors. The Kobo figure doing the rounds, that it rejected 45% of submissions in 2025, dates from its chief executive's remarks in April and reporting in June.
