Audiobooks for indie authors: ACX, Findaway Voices and the rights you keep

LessonsBy Chris Thomas1 November 20265 min read

ACX pays 50% exclusive or 30% non-exclusive in 2026. Voices by INaudio, once Findaway, is wide at 80% of store royalties. What each licence lets you keep.

An indie author has three realistic routes to an audiobook in November 2026. You can go through ACX, Amazon's audiobook exchange, which sells on Audible, Amazon and Apple Books. You can go through Voices by INaudio, the distributor that used to be Findaway Voices, which sends one audiobook to many stores and libraries. Or you can use Amazon's own virtual voice narration if KDP has invited you. The choice that matters most is whether you sign ACX's exclusive option, because that decides where else the recording can be sold.

In every case you keep the copyright in your book and, if you paid for the recording, in the audio as well. What you give away is a distribution licence, and the length and exclusivity of that licence is where the routes differ. We read each platform's own help pages on 1 November 2026, and the figures below come from them.

ACX: the rates changed this year

ACX's royalty help page says that since 26 May 2026, newly claimed titles, new users and titles enrolled in what Audible calls its new royalty model earn 50% for exclusive distribution and 30% for non-exclusive. Titles still on the legacy model earn 40% exclusive and 25% non-exclusive until the end of the year, when ACX says the legacy model will be discontinued and every title will need to be enrolled in the new one to stay on sale. If you have an older ACX title, that is the job to do before the end of December.

The new model also changes what the percentage is applied to. For Audible membership listening, royalties are now based on what ACX calls Member Value, which its announcement describes as the value of a member's plan and extra credits, shared across the titles that member listened to that month. Under the new model you can also suggest a price for each title and opt titles into all-you-can-listen catalogues such as Audible Plus.

The distribution help page sets out the licence. Audible has the right to distribute your audiobook for seven years. On the exclusive option you may not sell the audiobook anywhere outside Audible, Amazon and Apple Books, and ACX does not supply libraries at all, so library distribution needs the non-exclusive option. Exclusive titles may also be eligible for Kindle+, which since 21 October 2026 includes audiobooks for US customers, as we covered in what changed for indie authors in October 2026.

Seven years sounds like a long lock, but there is an exit. The Authors Guild reported when the terms changed in 2021 that rights holders on the DIY and Pay for Production routes can switch an exclusive title to non-exclusive, or end distribution, once it has been on sale for at least 90 days. That exit does not apply to Royalty Share titles.

Royalty Share: the narrator owns half the income

On ACX you can pay a narrator a fee per finished hour, which is Pay for Production, or pay nothing up front and split the royalty with them, which is Royalty Share. ACX's royalty page says the producer receives an equal share, so on an exclusive title in the new model you each get 25%. ACX's royalty page describes Royalty Share at the exclusive rate, the 90-day switch is not available, and ending distribution needs the producer's consent. In practice a Royalty Share recording stays on Audible on those terms for the seven years, and you cannot take it wide.

Voices by INaudio: wide, with a 20% cut

Findaway Voices was owned by Spotify and is now independent again under the name Voices by INaudio. Spotify's own help page confirms that Voices by INaudio was previously called Findaway Voices by Spotify. INaudio's help centre says there is no exclusivity agreement and that you own 100% of the rights to your audiobook.

The money works in two layers. Each store pays INaudio a royalty, which INaudio's royalty page puts at 40% to 50% of list price for single purchases, 30% to 40% for subscription listening and 25% to 45% of receipts for revenue-share partners. You then keep 80% of what INaudio receives. Spotify's help page says INaudio can also deliver to Audible and Apple Books, so you can reach Audible without signing an ACX exclusive.

A worked comparison

The arithmetic below uses a round $20 to show the shape of each deal. It is an illustration, since Audible's membership royalties are calculated on Member Value rather than a fixed price.

RouteYour shareOn $20
ACX exclusive, new model50%$10.00
ACX non-exclusive, new model30%$6.00
ACX Royalty Share, exclusive25%$5.00
INaudio, store paying 40% of list80% of 40%$6.40
INaudio, store paying 50% of list80% of 50%$8.00

Exclusive ACX pays most per unit on Audible. Going wide pays less per unit there but adds every other store and the library platforms, which ACX does not reach at all.

Virtual voice and Spotify for Authors

KDP's virtual voice help page describes an invitation-only beta for US marketplace ebooks. Amazon generates the narration, there is no stated fee, you set a list price from $3.99 to $14.99, and KDP pays 40%. If the ebook is in KDP Select, the audiobook must be exclusive to Audible for the enrolment period.

Spotify for Authors lets you upload an audiobook straight to Spotify, and Spotify's help page says it distributes to Spotify only. If you want it in other stores as well, Voices by INaudio is the route Spotify points to.

What to do, in order

  1. Check that you hold the audio rights. If an agent or publisher ever had a contract on the book, read its subsidiary rights clause before you commission anything.
  2. Decide whether the book is staying in KDP Select. If it is, and you want it in Kindle+, ACX exclusive is the natural fit. Our guide to KDP Select or going wide, book by book covers that decision for the ebook.
  3. If you can afford to pay the narrator, choose Pay for Production over Royalty Share, because it keeps the 90-day exit and the right to go wide later.
  4. If you already have a legacy ACX title, enrol it in the new model before the end of 2026 so it stays on sale.
  5. Keep the finished audio files and the narrator's contract in your own storage. They are yours, and they are what lets you move distributors later.

Once the audiobook is live, add its store links to your author page next to the ebook and paperback. The Indie Author Toolchest author page has room for every edition's links, and it sells the ebook and paperback direct, but it does not sell audiobooks itself.

Questions, answered

What royalty does ACX pay in 2026?

Under Audible's new royalty model, which opened to all ACX creators on 26 May 2026, ACX pays 50% for exclusive distribution and 30% for non-exclusive. Titles still on the legacy model earn 40% and 25% until the end of 2026, when ACX says the legacy model will be discontinued.

Can I switch my ACX audiobook from exclusive to non-exclusive?

Yes, if you made it through Pay for Production or as a DIY narrator and it has been on sale for at least 90 days, according to the Authors Guild's report of the ACX terms. Royalty Share titles cannot be switched, and ending their distribution needs the narrator's consent.

Do I keep the rights to my audiobook on ACX?

You keep the copyright in your book. What ACX takes is a licence for Audible to distribute the audiobook for seven years, and on the exclusive option that licence stops you selling it anywhere outside Audible, Amazon and Apple Books.

What happened to Findaway Voices?

Findaway Voices was owned by Spotify and now operates independently as Voices by INaudio. Spotify's help pages confirm the name change. INaudio says there is no exclusivity, that you own 100% of the rights to your audiobook, and that you keep 80% of the royalties it receives from stores.

Can I get my audiobook into libraries through ACX?

No. ACX's help pages say it does not provide distribution to libraries, and library distribution requires the non-exclusive option. A distributor such as Voices by INaudio is the usual route to library platforms.
